The Right Tool for the Right Job…

We see a variety when it comes to machines requiring repairs of one type
or another and the one question that comes up more often than not is
‘”is it worth fixing?”.  This may seem like a simple question. Is the
money I would spend repairing this computer being spent wisely or should
it go towards a new machine……?

I am always reluctant to answer, here’s why: a computer is a tool that
allows you to do a wide variety of tasks and some very cool stuff.  Some
machines run certain programs better than others, this is because
certain chipsets and their associated drivers work better with certain
applications and games than others. If you have a rock solid machine
that performs the tasks you require then it might well be worth spending
the money to repair it.

Often the hassle of setting all your email, favorites and personal
settings up again can be enough on their own to warrant  spending the
money on a repair. Then you have the possibility of having to learn a
whole new version of Windows. Finally presuming you have got all of this
re-set up and working, there is still the chance that your favorite
applications or games will either not run very well or at all on your
shiny new machine so you could have the added expense of purchasing an
upgrade or new version of these items.

Lastly, and this is one that some people overlook, is build quality.
Your laptop or desktop might be 4 or  5 years old and cost you. maybe,
$900 at the time. Your proposed replacement is $500 and the specs look
great, in fact a bargain for the money. Your old machine lasted as long
as it did partly because it was a well made machine and the original
price reflected that. The new machine looks good because of the specs
but remember, ALL machines of that class will have similar specs but the
standard to which they are made will vary greatly and this can often
contribute to how long the machine will remain working. Everything from
the case design, the quality of the fans and the R&D that went into
hardware compatibility can have a big impact on a machines longevity.

So before you discard your sick machine for the sake of a hard drive or
video card, think about all that might be involved in starting again
with a new machine and not just the monetary cost.  Everything that
glistens is not gold and newer is not always better.
